JP1 Chromebook Lab - 10/01

SECTION 1: LOG IN, GET DOCUMENT SET UP

  1. Get your chromebook
  2. Log in with your school email login -- Tell me if it doesn't work for you or if you need help.
  3. Go to your Google Drive
  4. Click on NEW and create a new Google Docs file
  5. In the document title area at the top, add your heading:  
        JP1  Firstname Lastname  CBL-10/01
  6. As a title in the document, write " 10 Japanese phrases I learned: "
  7. Create a list numbered 1-10.
SECTION 2: ADD JAPANESE AS A LANGUAGE

  1. Go to your settings: Click on the lower-right icon where can typically sign-out. Click on settings.
  2. Scroll all the way down. Just below "People", click on the link that says "Show advanced settings."
  3. Below "Web Content" is a section called "Languages". Click on "Language and Input Settings".
  4. In the "Languages" pane, click "Add". Scroll down to "Japanese" and click "OK".
  5. Under "Input Method", click on the box next to "Google Japanese Input (for US Keyboard)".
  6. Click "Done"
  7. Go to your Google Docs you have opened.
  8. For #1 (your first phrase), write "ohayou". Press space twice. Then press "ALT + SHIFT" together. Check in the lower right of the screen. If an あ character appeared next to your icon, then you can now write in Japanese. Press "ALT + SHIFT" again to change back to English.
  9. Now type the following keyboard characters in this order:  "  o h a y o u ENTER ". If you typed this correctly, you should now have the word おはよう on your screen.
  10. Next, add the English Meaning: "good morning".
  11. Now you should have  1.  ohayou  おはよう good morning
  12. Check my document to see if you have started your work correctly.
  13. Continue adding more terms from the video. Watch it again if you wish (click here to watch).
  14. After adding a term, you can check if it translated correctly by going to jisho.org and pasting the term in. 
  15. If you need help getting a term from Hiragana/Kanji to romaji, use lexilogos.com's tool.
  16. When you are done adding 10 terms from the video, move on to SECTION 3.
SECTION 3: CONVERT YOUR NAME TO KATAKANA
  1. Go to http://apps.nolanlawson.com/japanese-name-converter/ and enter your name.
  2. Copy and paste the answer you get below your list of terms from the video
  3. Next, go to http://www.sljfaq.org/cgi/e2k.cgi and type in your name in the English field.
  4. Copy and paste the answer you get below the first katakana version of your name.
SECTION 4: SHARE YOUR DOCUMENT WITH ME
  1. Click on "SHARE" in the upper right corner.
  2. Enter my email: adamallenanderson@gmail.com in the People field.
  3. Click Done.
SECTION 5: TRY A HIRAGANA DRAG-AND-DROP GAME
  1. If you finish early, try Hiragana Drag and Drop Exercise. Write down your best time in the Google Docs document when you are done.
