Latin American City Research Project Presentation Rubric


  • Be prepared to summarize your research on all areas listed below. 
  • Be prepared to speak about the process of researching your 2025 population estimate figure. Show your source by clicking on the url/address in your PowerPoint or other presentation slideshow. 
  • Finally, be prepared to explain what you would do in the city you researched and why.


SCORING -- 50 points possible

·        40pts - Touch on all areas of research. Show image and data sources on each slide.

Suggestions for Research if you get stuck...
  1. Try Spanish Wikipedia page for your city: https://es.wikipedia.org
  2. Within the Spanish Wikipedia page, search for what you need:
    1. demografía: lengua, raza/étnica/etnicidad, religión
    2. población: tasa de crecimiento, urbanización
    3. turismo: habitación, barato/a, de lujo, página oficial, albergue juvenil, hostal, hotel 
  3. Alternatively, try some of these Spanish keyword searches in your favorite search engine.
  4. NOTE: General country-wide information (demographics, pop. growth, etc.) can be found at the CIA World Factbook page.

  • F = final population
  • P = original population
  • I = growth rate (per year), as a number (0.01 = 1%)
  • NT = number of years (assuming 10 years, 2015 to 2025)

PRETERITE PAST TENSE vs. IMPERFECT PAST TENSE QUIZ -- Friday, May 22

Quiz will be 10 Questions, multiple choice. All in English.

For example:
EX. Why should we use a preterite past tense verb when translating the following English sentence into Spanish: "We left the house at five o'clock last night."

A. It is a repeated action.
B. The action occurs over a specific duration of time.
C. It gives background information.
D. It is a complete action with a starting time.
Review your notes:

IMPERFECT -- When it's used:
  • Habits and Repeated Actions in the past
  • Phrases like "I used to"... "We would always..."
  • Actions and events with an Unspecified Duration of Time
  • To set the scene in a story and give Background Information
IMPERFECT -- Examples:
  • Iba a la tienda. (I used to go to the store.)
  • Leíamos los libros. (We would read the books.)
PRETERITE -- When it's used:
  • Complete Actions and Events
  • One-Time Events
  • Series of Complete Events
  • The Beginning or End of an Action or Event
  • A Change in the State of something
  • Events with a Specific Duration of Time
PRETERITE -- Examples:
  • Fuimos ayer a la playa. (We went to the beach yesterday.)
  • Fui ayer a la tienda seis veces. (I went to the store six times yesterday.)
  • Tuvo frío. (He got cold.)  
  • El huracán se terminó a las ocho. (The hurricane was over at 8.)

    • Try for UNDER 4 minutes! My attempt this morning I got 2:56.
    • Tell me your time when you are finished.
    • Move on to Activity #2.

    • Try for 40% accuracy or higher (wait after the game is done for your percentage to be displayed). My best this morning was 45%.
    • Tell me your accuracy rate when you are finished.
    • Move on to Activity #3.

    3) INSTALL JAPANESE KEYBOARD ON WINDOWS -- http://yesjapan.com/video/pages/install-japanese-windows-7-vista.html
    • UPDATE: If Windows Control Panel is not accessible, use: http://gate2home.com/Japanese-Keyboard, a virtual keyboard. Write the sentence "My name is _______." in Japanese.
    • Follow the steps 1 through 9.
    • When you have finished step 9, typing out the sentence with your name in katakana, please raise your hand to get checked off.
    • You may try other sentences and phrases if you like.
    • Move on to Activity #4 when finished.

    Research your assigned city (get assignment in class) and create a presentation with the following information and slides:

    Slides #1-3 -- DEMOGRAPHIC MAKEUP: 
    • Racial/Ethic Diversity, on 1 slide, with one image with a source
    • Religious Diversity, on 1 slide, with one image with a source
    • Linguistic Diversity, on 1 slide, with one image with a source
    Slide #4 -- POPULATION AND REGION:

    JP1 HW: Kanji #1-20 Review - DUE Mon., 5/11

    Download and print the attached PDF file to complete this assignment.

    Review our first 20 kanji and then practice by creating as many kanji combinations and example words as possible, 30 minimum.

    One new word we have is 人生。Pronounced: じんせい。This means "life", as in 'my life' or 'in life'.

    Add this to your table and find as many more as you can.
